I’m just a furnace contractor so help me try to understand the logic behind why homeowners don’t have their furnace or boiler cleaned, maintained or tuned-up.

As a Furnace Contractor every year we send out to our customer’s 1600 post cards as a reminder that it’s time to have their furnace or boiler cleaned, maintained or tuned-up. And every year less than one third respond to our reminder post card, and every year when the temperatures drop and the other percentages of our customers are having problems with their furnace or boiler they call, what gives?

My point is this, and this is where I need some understanding, our post cards prices for furnace or boiler cleaned, maintained or tuned-up are $79.95 but if we’re called out for a repair, the prices changes significantly. Now I’m not saying a tune up will guarantee the heating equipment will not break down, but while our technicians are performing the annual maintenance check they may see a potential problem and suggest fixing or changing the part that might be failing. The benefit of making the repair on the spot is this; there is no extra labor charge and you get the part at 15% over cost verses 30% or even more (depends on part) why would anyone pay the extra amount?

As a furnace contractor. Like any business we are out to make money but with existing customers as well as new customers we want to serve them well and do them justice by looking out for their best interests concerning the heating systems.
