EMERGENCY WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR CHICAGO
Weather here in Chicago has been recorded at a temperature of -15. This dangerously cold weather breaks a record low of -14 set on this date in 1988. Officials are warning residents to stay indoors as much as possible.
With the windchill, today’s temperatures can hit -40 to -50 degrees. Only a few minutes of exposed skin can result in frostbite. This weather is set to persist all day and even until tomorrow where temperatures may only rise to a high of single digits.
Extremely cold temperatures have also affected all forms of transportation including major delays on the CTA and cancellations at O’Hare and Midway. As for roads, high winds with drifting snow is causing deteriorating driving conditions. Some roads and alleys are impassable due to snow buildup.
Here at Around the Town HVAC we want you to stay warm. Having your heating system checked routinely will help ensure its functioning correctly during these weather conditions. Maintaining and repairing your unit is critical. Subzero temperatures are extremely demanding on your furnace or boiler.
Our certified technicians will inspect your heating system and take care of any necessary repairs. A broken unit in this weather can put you and your family at risk.
Other than maintaining your heating system, here are some other valuable tips for winter weather:
1. Stay indoors unless necessary. If you must go outdoors, wear multiple layers, gloves, a hat, and a scarf over your mouth to protect your lungs.
2. Keep an emergency kit for your home including a working radio, heating equipment, flashlight, blankets, and food.
3. Shut off all outdoor faucets and let your indoor faucets drip to prevent freezing pipes.
4. Keep your home warm, even when you are not there, at least 55 degrees to prevent damage to your home.
