City may hit 80 degrees on Sunday

Chicagoans finally may be reminded what an 80-degree day feels like this weekend, as almost summerlike temperatures creep into the area Sunday.

The last time O’Hare International Airport saw temperatures of 80 or above was Oct. 11, when the mercury hit 82 degrees. Downtown hasn’t seen weather that warm since Oct. 10, when it was 86, said National Weather Service meteorologist Richard Castro.

“Some of the locations in Illinois already got to 80 degrees” when Chicago hit 72 on April 3, Castro said.

Topping 80 this time of year isn’t unheard of—the record high for Sunday’s date is 90, set in 1930—but hitting 80 would best the date’s average high temperature by 25 degrees, Castro said.
