When there’s a fungus among us, damaging your home and your family’s health, the solution can be simple. “If you control moisture, you’ll control mold,” explained Mike Poellinger, chairman of the Responsible Solutions to Mold Coalition, a building industry trade group. To prevent moisture and mold, the coalition recommends:
• Make sure that moisture-sensitive building materials are not stored outside or exposed to weather before installation.
• Roof designs should be designed to drain freely and allow water to move rapidly off roofs and away from the building.
• Use water-resistive barriers behind tub and shower tile installations, so water permeating through tile grout drains back into the tub or shower pan–not into the wall cavity.

Fungi can cause a number of life-threatening diseases but they also are becoming increasingly useful to science and manufacturing every year. However, many people, scientists among them, are largely unaware of the roles fungi play in the world around us. Research on fungi and fungal diseases are seriously neglected as a result – a situation with grave negative repercussions for human health, agriculture, and the environment– according to The Fungal Kingdom: Diverse and Essential Roles in Earth’s Ecosystem, a new report from the American Academy of Microbiology.

Central AC is one of those things that you miss the most only have you don’t have it. This is especially true on the first few hot and humid summer days when you first try to turn on your air conditioner and nothing happens! A typical central air conditioner will only last between 12 to 15 years, so if your central AC is about this old you may want to start budgeting for a new one. A single visit from a heating and cooling repairman may cost $100 or more, so it’s worth trying a few of these simple and free steps! Before you try any of these steps, be safe and only attempt what you feel comfortable with. Most of these tips are electrical in nature because a central air conditioner system draws a lot of power and as the units get older they sometimes have to draw more power to work a little harder. Many times this extra power drain simply pops fuses or fires off reset switches which need to be found and switched back on.

Finally!!! Summer weather. Oh wait… I’d forgotten how our house holds the heat.
Here are some things I’ve tried, in lieu of real air conditioning, that actually do help a bit:
1) Closing the blinds/curtains to keep the sun out (reeeeally?? you mean shade is cooler??). Why I haven’t tried this sooner is beyond me. I think that I was too worried about blocking the movement of fresh air, but it’s definitely worth it.
2) Using a fan: sitting on the ledge of any window that’s in the shade, blowing inward. At the moment this would be my kitchen, and it’s positively chilly in there!
3) Closing doors and windows that have the sun beating down on them (stay out, warm air!!).
4) Opening doors or windows at opposite ends of the house to create a cross breeze.
5) Wearing ice packs (ahhhh!!!). (Although this is tricky if you’re doing house work

A room air conditioner is a small, self-contained unit designed to cool just one room of a building. While most models of room air conditioners are placed in windows, there are some models that are installed to go through an exterior wall opening. These small air conditioning units must be placed in a window or in a wall opening, in order to allow for the air exchange that is needed for the unit to function properly. Room air conditioners are often a good choice for renters, since they can be removed fairly easily and can be reinstalled in a new location. The drawback is that these small air conditioning units tend to be quite a bit less energy efficient than a central air conditioning system would be.

Does your basement ever flood? Is your basement ever damp? If so, you may need to inspect your basement for mold, and possibly remodel it to remove the mold. You may suspect hidden mold if your basement smells moldy, but you cannot see the source. You may know there has been water damage, but not think there is mold. Mold may be hidden in places such as the back side of drywall, behind wallpaper, or paneling, the top side of ceiling tiles, underneath carpets and pads, etc.

By keeping a few basic things in mind, you can stay clear of excessive and improper usage of your air conditioner and also avoid hefty electricity bills. Here are some tips which can help you:
• Thermostat should be kept in a proper place so that it gives accurate readings. Thermostat should not be kept near a device that produces heat because this will affect the readings of the thermostat.
• Windows should be closed so it does not let heat into the room in summer and keeps cold outside during the winter time.
• The outside part of the air conditioning system should never be directly facing towards the sun.
• The installation of a thermostat timer saves money because the timer is set in such a way that it keeps on checking the temperature automatically.
• Maintaining the humidity at proper level is important.

It’s the Season for Personal Air Conditioners
Personal air conditioners are superb inventions. Using a full size air conditioner is great, except that it eats energy, makes your electric bill rise through the roof and you cannot take it with you when you go out in the heat. Fans are also a great option, but when it is so hot outside the pavement is melting, fans just seem to circulating hot air. How can you beat the heat? Personal air conditioners come to the rescue.
